Dexter Cattle

Dexter cattle are a small breed of cattle. Cows typically range in mature height from 34 to 46 inches measured at the hip. Bulls typically range in mature heigh from 36 to 50 inches measured at the hip. They are a tri-purpose breed used for beef production, milk production, and as draft animals. This breed of cattle is hardy and low maintenance. They are known for their even temperament and ease of handling. Dexter cows typically make excellent mothers with a high fertility rate and a low rate of calving difficulties. They come in three colors: black, red, and dun and can be horned or naturally polled.

Dexter cattle are native to the Kerry region of southwestern Ireland. The first recorded importation of Dexters to America lists more than 200 cattle arriving between 1905 and 1915. Now Dexter cattle can be found in nearly every state in the United States.

While they are small, Dexter cattle are known for having quality tasting beef. While other beef cattle breeds will typically yeild only 40 to 50% of their weight in beef, Dexters will be closer to 50 to 55%.

When it comes to milk, a Dexter cow will produce 1 to 2 gallons of milk at a milking. This is less milk than dairy breeds but a more manageable quantity for homesteaders. The butterfat is around 4% and is naturally more homogenized into the milk. Dexter cows can have A1/A1, A1/A2, and A2/A2 milk.
